Aims and Scope

Human Biology is an international, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal dedicated to research concerning human biology, human biological variation, human populations, health, evolution, and related biological processes.

The journal provides a forum for original research and scholarly contributions from researchers working across biological, biomedical, genetic, anthropological, epidemiological, environmental, nutritional, demographic, and population sciences.

Human Biology welcomes rigorous research that advances understanding of humans as biological organisms and populations. The journal particularly encourages interdisciplinary research that combines approaches from multiple fields to address important questions in human biology.

Areas of Interest

The journal's scope includes, but is not limited to:

Human Genetics and Genomics

Human genetic variation, genomics, molecular genetics, genetic diversity, inheritance, ancestry, adaptation, and genetic factors associated with human health and disease.

Population Genetics and Human Evolution

Population structure, genetic diversity, migration, demographic history, evolutionary processes, natural selection, adaptation, human evolution, and biological relationships among populations.

Biological Anthropology

Biological and evolutionary anthropology, human variation, morphology, population biology, human adaptation, biological diversity, and related anthropological research.

Ancient DNA and Paleogenomics

Ancient DNA, paleogenomics, archaeological genetics, biomolecular analysis, ancestry, population history, evolutionary relationships, and analysis of ancient biological remains.

Human Population Biology

Biological and demographic characteristics of human populations, geographic variation, migration, displacement, secular trends, climate-related effects, adaptation, and population-level biological processes.

Human Anatomy and Morphology

Human anatomical structure, morphology, tissues, organs, skeletal biology, musculoskeletal systems, anatomical variation, and related research.

Human Physiology

Human physiological systems, homeostasis, metabolism, adaptation, regulation, biological functions, and interactions among physiological systems.

Human Health, Disease and Immunology

Human diseases, infectious diseases, immunology, host–pathogen interactions, molecular mechanisms, disease prevention, diagnosis, transmission, and control.

Epidemiology and Population Health

Disease distribution, determinants of health, population health, epidemiological methods, genetic epidemiology, disease prevention, and population-level health research.

Human Nutrition and Lifestyle

Human nutrition, dietary patterns, nutritional status, biomarkers, dietary assessment, breastfeeding, energy balance, nutritional requirements, lifestyle factors, and relationships between nutrition and health.

Environmental and Ecological Human Biology

Interactions between humans and their biological and physical environments, environmental influences on human populations, adaptation, ecological conditions, environmental health, and related research.

Human Growth and Development

Human growth, maturation, developmental biology, life-course biology, and biological variation throughout human development.

Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology

Human skeletal biology, bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, human remains, biological profiles, population history, trauma, health, disease, and related research.

Interdisciplinary Research

Human Biology welcomes interdisciplinary research that integrates approaches from two or more fields.

Research combining genetics, genomics, anthropology, evolutionary biology, biomedical sciences, epidemiology, environmental biology, nutrition, demography, anatomy, physiology, or related disciplines is encouraged when the research question and findings are clearly relevant to human biology.
